Erasing summer brain drain
Over the long summer, most kids – especially those in low-income brackets – lose at least two months of learning. This not only impacts the current school year but continues to affect their academic achievements for years to come. When they return to school, their teachers have to help them play catch-up in math, reading and writing. The Boys & Girls Club of the Gila Valley plans to erase that seasonal brain drain with the Summer Brain Gain program.
Piloted by the Boys & Girls Club of America last year at 200 locations, the Brain Gain program resulted in 100 percent of its participants with no learning loss
over the summer. That is zero learning loss! In fact, many of the Club members showed up at school with better critical thinking skills. To help make this and other beneficial programs available to our young people, donate to the Boys & Girls Club of the Gila Valley on AZGives Day on April 9. Contact us at Boys & Girls Club of the Gila Valley, 805 S. Seventh Ave., Safford or 928-424-2100. Support Gila Valley kids
Dump your aluminum cans in the blue bins, and not only will you do your part to protect our environment, you will also help the youth of our community.
Vista Recycling retrofitted, painted and donated the first bin, pictured left, and placed it at the Boys & Girls Club site at 805 S. Seventh Ave. in Safford. There are now two more bins - one at JoBi's Market and one at Mt. Graham Market on Swift Trail.
The Club plans to use grant money to purchase several more bins and will be seeking permission to place the bins at various high-traffic areas in the Valley.
We ask that Club members, parents and staff help spread the word about the Cans4Kids project. Look for the logo above on the sides of bins and on posters and flyers.
Also, if anyone has suggestions about where bins should be placed, please e-mail email@example.com.
